The initiative to collect machines, tools and objects related to various phases of the production of printed or typed archival material at the Ionian University and the Department of Archives, Library Science and Museology belongs to Mr. Ioannis Kokkonas, former Professor at the Department, who undertook this action with the financial and moral support of the Department and the Ionian University from 2003 onwards.
The collection of these objects exhibited at the Department of Archives, Library Science and Museology has two aims: First, to serve as supervisory material in the Department of Archives, Library Science and Museology courses such as Book and Typography History, Bibliology, and Archival Studies. By studying the past technologies of document production and by physically describing these documents, students are given the opportunity to gain a better understanding of documents or printed matter of any kind as material objects. A second goal is that these as museum objects familiarize students and visitors to the collection with earlier phases of information technologies, giving them a sense of the origins and precursors of modern media based on digital technology.
