The printing medium in lithography was a slab of porous limestone. The reflection of the image to be printed was drawn on this plate with a hydrophobic substance (greasy pencil, etc.).  The plate was then impregnated with an aqueous solution of Arabic gum and nitric acid for a few hours. The aqueous solution eroded the plate only in the areas that were not designed, as the other areas were protected by the hydrophobic substance. Then the plate was washed with water and turpentine and while still wet, it was inked with hydrophobic ink. The plate was placed on a flat manual press and the paper was pressed onto it to make the print.
