Lecture
Designing "experiences" in museums and libraries: Models and practices from business to cultural organisations.
Ioannis Poulios, Assistant Professor of the Department of Tourism, Ionian University.
Location: Ionian University, I. Theotoki 72 2nd floor Classroom 2.39
The lecture focuses on the examination of the term "museum experience", and how it is designed and offered to visitors. The mission of museums, as recently defined by the International Council of Museums, is that of "offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing".
But what is an 'experience'? And how is it designed and offered to visitors?
This presentation approaches the topic from a business strategy and management perspective. In particular, it introduces the 'experience model', which has proven successful in times of crisis in cultural organisations. Particular reference is made to museums and libraries. First, the model in question is described - the concept of 'experience', the fundamental principle of the model and its methodology - and then good practices for its application are formulated. Finally, it looks at ways of ensuring that the specificities of cultural property are respected.
