The International Council of Museums (ICOM), in order to emphasize the impact of museums, has declared the 18th of May “International Day of Museums”, since 1977. For this year’s celebration theme, ICOM has chosen “The power of Museums”, in an attempt to give prominence to their societal role as carriers of sustainability and positive change.
“Museum transform people. They present the future, open new horizons and cultivate groundbreaking ideas with the intention of building a better new future.” ICOM, 2022
Within this context the people of the “Museum Collections of the Ionian University” would like to give voice to the people of Corfu and invite them to photograph the identity of the island as it emerges through the moments of everyday life, our customs and of course the historic trademarks that lay around us. We aim to create a new “map” of Corfu, which will be composed by the manifold aspects and apprehensions that form its unique identity.
The thematic units that people are asked to be inspired from are:
The past – through local History
The diverse natural environment of Corfu along with its ecological issues
The present – through everyday life, Culture and Heritage
The co-existence of past and present through the continuation of the traditions.
Through your photographs, which can be sent to email address museum@ionio.gr , until the 8th of May, accompanied by a short comment of yours, if you will, the University Museum will aim for the empowerment of Corfu’s community through the display of the island’s identity as it is reflected on its people.
